A VNA truck is a Very Narrow Aisle forklift, designed to work in aisles as tight as around 1.6 to 2 metres, roughly half the width a conventional counterbalance or reach truck needs. VNA trucks come in two main forms, man-down (the operator stays at ground level while the forks rise) and man-up (the operator’s cab rises with the load, often to heights above 10 metres). In 2026 the key compliance point is unchanged: a standard counterbalance or reach truck certificate does not cover VNA operation, so operators need VNA-specific training, either as novices or via a shorter conversion course.

What is a VNA truck and how does it work?
VNA stands for Very Narrow Aisle. These trucks exist to solve one problem: storage density. By shrinking aisle widths and lifting to greater heights, a VNA layout can dramatically increase the number of pallet locations in the same building footprint, which is why high-bay warehouses and third-party logistics operations rely on them.
Because the aisles are too narrow to turn in, VNA trucks do not turn to face the racking. Instead they travel along the aisle and use rotating or traversing forks, or a swivelling mast head, to pick and place pallets on either side. Within the aisle they are typically guided, either by floor-mounted guide rails or by wire guidance buried in the floor, so the truck tracks precisely down the centre of the aisle at height.
What is the difference between man-up and man-down VNA trucks?
- Man-down VNA trucks. The operator remains in a cab at ground level while the forks and load travel up the mast. The operator judges high-level pallet positioning from below, often with camera assistance on modern trucks.
- Man-up VNA trucks. The operator’s cab elevates with the forks, so the operator is at eye level with the pallet location, sometimes well above 10 metres. Man-up trucks (also called combi or high-level order pickers in some fleets) give precise control at height but introduce their own risks: working at height, harness use, emergency lowering and rescue procedures.
The two types handle differently and carry different risks, which is why training is matched to the specific configuration the operator will use.
Why doesn’t a counterbalance certificate cover VNA?
Lift-truck training in the UK is category-specific. The HSE’s Approved Code of Practice L117 requires operators to receive adequate basic training on the type of truck they will use, and a VNA truck shares almost nothing operationally with a counterbalance machine:
- Different controls. Traversing and rotating fork heads, guidance systems and aisle entry procedures have no counterbalance equivalent.
- Different environment. Working within millimetres of racking on both sides, at heights far beyond a typical counterbalance mast.
- Different risks. Aisle-end transitions, guidance failures, working at height in man-up cabs, and pedestrian exclusion in operating aisles.
So a counterbalance certificate, or a reach truck certificate, does not qualify an operator for VNA. Putting a non-VNA-trained operator in a VNA truck leaves the employer short of the adequate training duty under PUWER 98, exactly as if the operator had no training at all. What is VNA conversion training?
Experienced operators do not have to start from zero. NCT offers three routes onto VNA equipment:
- Novice. For those without formal lift-truck training, covering the full syllabus from first principles.
- Refresher. For trained VNA operators renewing their certificate, typically on the cycle described in our guide to refresher training frequency.
- Conversion. For operators already trained and certificated on another truck type, such as counterbalance or reach, who need to add VNA. Conversion courses credit existing skills and focus on what is genuinely new, so they are shorter than novice training.
Course durations depend on the route, the truck configuration and group size, and are confirmed at booking.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate licence for a VNA truck?
No forklift licence exists in UK law, but training is category-specific. An operator needs VNA-specific training and certification before operating a VNA truck, even if they already hold counterbalance or reach truck certificates. An RTITB VNA certificate is the standard evidence employers look for.
Can a counterbalance driver do a shorter VNA course?
Yes. That is exactly what conversion training is for. An operator with existing certificated experience on another truck type takes a conversion course that focuses on VNA-specific controls, guidance systems and working at height, rather than repeating the full novice syllabus.
Is man-up VNA training different from man-down?
The core syllabus is shared, but training is delivered on the configuration the operator will actually use, and man-up operation brings additional elements such as elevated-cab controls, harness use and emergency lowering procedures. How high do VNA trucks lift?
It varies by model, but VNA trucks routinely serve racking well beyond the reach of counterbalance trucks, with many man-up machines working above 10 metres. The greater the height, the more precise guidance, pre-use checks and operator discipline matter.
How often should VNA operators be refreshed?
No law sets an expiry, but employers must keep operators competent, and regular refresher training is standard industry practice, typically every three to five years or sooner after incidents, near misses or long breaks from the truck.
