Legal Requirements

Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers must ensure that anyone operating a forklift truck has received adequate training. The HSE's Approved Code of Practice L117 sets out the standards for forklift operator training, which RTITB accreditation fully meets. Operating a forklift without proper training is not only dangerous but can result in serious legal consequences for both the operator and employer.

CPC Courses are, at best boring and at worse not worth the money. Now that I have completed my 5 modules, 4 of which were with Andrew, who has a special way of getting the point of some things into my head, believe me that is no small feat. I have thoroughly enjoyed all modules that NCT arranged for me, plus the fact it is now done via Zoom just helped me to remember it. The whole experience was so simple, right from booking a full 5 day course, to today, where I can say 'no more til next year' same place, different dates.
I wouldn't hesitate to book again with NCT. 10/10 for the guys and girls in the office, the ones we don't get to see. The price as well, considering there I'd so many Lorry and Coach Drivers that, like me have left it to the last minute before renewing their CPC Cards. My advice on that one would be to shop around, I did and NCP were by far alot cheaper than most of the others I contacted.

Do I need a driving licence to operate a forklift?

No, you do not need a car driving licence to operate a forklift truck. Forklift licences are separate workplace qualifications. However, you do need to be at least 18 years old to operate a forklift in a workplace environment under UK law.

How long does a forklift licence last?

RTITB recommends that forklift operator certification is renewed every 3 years through a refresher course. However, individual employers may require more frequent refresher training, and operators should maintain their skills through regular use. The certification is recorded on the RTITB database for easy verification by employers.

Can you train at our premises?

What's the difference between novice and experienced operator courses?

Novice courses (3-5 days) are for people with no previous forklift experience and cover everything from basic controls to advanced manoeuvres. Experienced operator courses (1-2 days) are for people who have been operating forklifts but don't hold a formal qualification – the course assesses existing skills and fills any gaps before certification.

Is the RTITB licence recognised internationally?

RTITB is recognised as a world-leading accrediting body and their qualifications are accepted by many employers internationally. However, some countries may have their own specific requirements, so it's worth checking with prospective employers in other countries about their exact requirements.

What equipment do I need to bring?

You should wear appropriate safety footwear (steel toe cap boots), comfortable clothing suitable for practical work, and high-visibility clothing if you have it (though we can provide this). For theory elements, bring something to write with. All training equipment, including forklifts, is provided by us.

What happens if I fail the assessment?

Our pass rates are excellent because we ensure candidates are fully prepared before assessment. We want to see you succeed and will support you through the process.
