Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between EFAW and FAW?
Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is a one-day course covering life-saving basics. First Aid at Work (FAW) is a three-day course for designated workplace first aiders covering a wider range of injuries and illnesses. Your first aid needs assessment determines which you need.
How many first aiders does my workplace need?
There is no fixed number in law - the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to assess their own needs based on workforce size, hazards and shift patterns. As a guide, HSE suggests at least one trained first aider for lower-risk workplaces of 25 to 50 people.
How long does a first aid certificate last?
Three years. You must requalify before expiry - a two-day requalification course for FAW. HSE also strongly recommends an annual refresher to keep skills current.
Do nurseries and schools need paediatric first aid?
Yes. The EYFS framework requires at least one person with a current paediatric first aid certificate on the premises and on outings where early-years children are present.
