RTITB Banksman Training Across the UK
A banksman (also known as a signaller or banks person) is a trained professional responsible for safely guiding vehicle movements in areas where driver visibility is restricted, space is limited, or pedestrians are at risk. Banksmen play a vital role in preventing workplace transport accidents, which remain one of the leading causes of serious injury and fatality on UK work sites.
National Compliance Training delivers RTITB-accredited banksman courses designed to equip delegates with the knowledge, communication skills, and practical techniques needed to marshal vehicles safely and confidently. Whether you operate in construction, warehousing, logistics, or manufacturing, our training ensures your team meets legal obligations and industry best practice.
Our banksman training is available as a one-day course for both novice and refresher candidates, delivered at our fully equipped Midlands training centre in Nuneaton or on-site at your premises anywhere in the UK.

RTITB Accredited Training Provider
National Compliance Training is a fully accredited RTITB training provider. RTITB (Road Transport Industry Training Board) is the UK's leading accrediting body for workplace transport and logistics training. Our RTITB accreditation means every banksman course we deliver meets the highest industry standards, our instructors are regularly audited for quality, and your certification is recognised by employers across the UK and internationally. Upon successful completion, your qualification is registered on the RTITB national database for easy employer verification.
Legal Requirements for Banksman Operations
Under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers must ensure that workplace transport is managed safely. The HSE guidance document HSG136 (Workplace Transport Safety) specifically recommends the use of trained banksmen where reversing or vehicle manoeuvring creates risk. Additionally, many construction sites require banksman certification under CDM Regulations 2015. Failing to provide properly trained banksmen can result in prosecution, significant fines, and most importantly, serious injuries or fatalities. Employers have a duty of care to ensure anyone directing vehicle movements has received adequate, accredited training.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a banksman and why is training required?
A banksman (also called a signaller or banks person) is a trained individual responsible for guiding vehicles safely during manoeuvres where the driver has limited visibility, such as reversing, navigating tight spaces, or operating near pedestrians. Training is required because workplace transport accidents are among the most common causes of serious injury and death in UK workplaces. The HSE strongly recommends that anyone directing vehicle movements holds a recognised qualification, and many employers and construction sites require RTITB banksman certification as a minimum standard.
How long does a banksman certificate last?
The RTITB Banksman Certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of successful completion. After 3 years, you will need to complete a refresher course to renew your certification. We recommend booking your refresher before your certificate expires to ensure continuous compliance. Your certification is registered on the RTITB national database, making it easy for employers to verify your qualification.
Can you deliver banksman training at our premises?
Yes, we offer on-site banksman training across the entire UK. On-site delivery is often more cost-effective for businesses with multiple delegates to train, and has the advantage of training your team in the actual environment they will be working in. We bring all necessary training materials and equipment. Contact us for a tailored quote based on your location, number of delegates, and specific requirements.
What is the difference between novice and refresher banksman courses?
The novice banksman course is for individuals who have never held a banksman qualification or have no formal training in vehicle marshalling. It covers all theory and practical elements from the ground up. The refresher course is for people who already hold an RTITB banksman certificate that is due to expire or has recently expired. Both courses are one day in duration and both result in a full RTITB Banksman Certificate valid for 3 years.
Do I need any prerequisites or PPE for the course?
There are no formal prerequisites for the novice banksman course — you do not need prior experience or qualifications. You should be at least 18 years old. For PPE, we recommend wearing safety footwear (steel toe cap boots) and a high-visibility vest or jacket. If you do not have hi-vis clothing, we can provide it. Bring something to write with for the theory elements. All other training materials and equipment are provided.
Is the RTITB banksman qualification recognised nationwide?
Yes. RTITB is the UK's leading accrediting body for workplace transport training and their qualifications are widely recognised and respected across all industries. Many major construction companies, logistics firms, and warehousing operations specifically require RTITB certification for banksmen working on their sites. The qualification is also recognised internationally, though some countries may have additional local requirements.
How do I book a banksman course?
You can book by calling us on 020 3026 4629, completing the enquiry form on this page, or emailing us directly. For on-site training or group bookings of multiple delegates, contact us for a personalised quote. We offer flexible scheduling to suit your business needs, and finance options are available through Payl8r for individual bookings.
What happens if I fail the banksman assessment?
Our pass rates are excellent because we ensure candidates are well prepared throughout the training day before any assessment takes place. However, if you do not pass first time, we will work with you to identify the areas that need improvement and arrange additional training and a reassessment. Our goal is to see every delegate succeed, and we will support you through the process.
