The CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Managers and Professionals, usually called the MAP test, is the version of the CITB test taken by people who manage construction work: site managers, project managers, and degree-qualified or chartered professionals. It has 50 questions to answer in 45 minutes, sat at a Pearson VUE test centre, with a higher pass mark than the operatives’ test. A pass is valid for two years for the purpose of applying for a CSCS card, and it is required for the Black manager card and the White Academically Qualified Person and Professionally Qualified Person cards.
Many managers assume that experience will get them through the MAP test and are surprised to fail. The test expects you to answer as the person legally in charge, and the legal and management questions are where most marks are lost. This guide explains who needs the test, what it covers, and how to prepare.
Who needs the MAP test
The MAP test is for people applying for management-level CSCS cards. That includes:
- the Black Manager card, for construction managers holding a relevant NVQ or SVQ Level 6 or 7
- the White Academically Qualified Person (AQP) card, for people with a construction-related degree, HND, HNC or similar
- the White Professionally Qualified Person (PQP) card, for members of approved professional bodies
Site supervisors applying for the Gold Supervisory card sit the Specialist test for supervisors instead. Operatives and people applying for a Green Labourer card sit the Operatives test. If you are unsure which card and which test applies to you, our guide to which CSCS card you need works through the options.
What the test covers
The MAP test covers the same five broad areas as the operatives’ test, with a much heavier weighting on legal duties and management responsibility:
- Legal and management: the Health and Safety at Work Act, CDM 2015 and the duties of clients, designers, principal contractors and contractors, risk assessment and method statements, RIDDOR, and consultation with workers.
- Health and welfare: occupational health, noise, vibration, dust and silica, asbestos, manual handling, and welfare facilities.
- General safety: site set-up, PPE, fire, electricity, plant and equipment, and safe systems of work.
- High risk activities: working at height, excavations, confined spaces, lifting operations and demolition.
- Environment: waste, pollution, protected species and environmental management on site.
The test also includes behavioural case study questions, based on a short film shown before the test, which ask what a manager should do in a given situation. There is usually a defensible answer and a popular wrong one, and the difference is whether you answer as the person accountable or as a bystander.
The format on the day
You book a slot at a Pearson VUE test centre and bring photo ID. The test is on a touch screen, 50 questions in 45 minutes, and you get your result printed before you leave. If you pass, the result feeds through to your CSCS card application. If you fail, you can rebook, but each attempt costs the test fee again.
How to prepare
The published revision material is the starting point, but the candidates who fail have usually read it once and assumed it would stick. What works is repeated mock testing under time pressure until you are passing comfortably, then booking the real test while the material is fresh. A good rule is two consecutive mock passes at 90 per cent or better before you book. Focus your revision on the legal and management section, because that is where the MAP test differs most from anything you have sat before and where the bulk of the marks sit.
Read each question fully. Many MAP questions include a scenario, and the answer depends on a detail in the scenario, such as who the duty holder is. Managers who skim and answer from experience are the ones who get caught.

Frequently asked questions
How long is a MAP test pass valid?
Two years for the purpose of applying for a CSCS card. Apply for the card within that window, because an expired test pass means sitting the test again.
Can I take the MAP test online at home?
The CITB test is sat at Pearson VUE test centres. Check the current CITB arrangements when you book, as options change.
Is the MAP test harder than the operatives’ test?
Yes. The pass mark is higher and the questions expect a management-level understanding of legal duties. Experienced managers usually find the high risk and general safety sections straightforward and lose marks on CDM and legal responsibility.
Do I need the MAP test if I already have an NEBOSH or IOSH qualification?
For a CSCS card, yes. The CITB test is a separate requirement from the qualification that supports your card application, although some professional body memberships allow an exemption. Check with CSCS for your specific card.
